The Nine Chapters

The earliest Chinese mathematical text, The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, was first produced in the 1st century BC. Many commentaries were written over the ensuing centuries, the best of which was by Liu Hui in AD 263. The text demonstrates Pythagoras’ theorem (derived independently) and shows how to calculate such distances as the height of a tower seen from a hill, the breadth of an estuary, the height or a pagoda and the depth or a ravine. It also deals with finding areas and volumes of figures such as trapezoids, circles, segments of circles, cylinders, pyramids and spheres.

El texto matemático chino más antiguo, Los Nueve Capítulos del Arte Matemático, apareció por primera vez en el siglo I a.C. Se escribieron muchos comentarios a lo largo de los siglos siguientes, el mejor de los cuales fue de Liu Hui en 263 d.C. El texto demuestra el teorema de Pitágoras (deducido de forma independiente) y enseña como calcular distancias tales como la altura de una torre vista desde una colina, la anchura de un estuario, la altura de una pagoda y la profundidad de un barranco.
