The + and – symbols

One of the earliest signs to show that two numbers had to be added was an Ancient Egyptian hieroglyph represented by a pair of legs walking forward in the direction of the writing. Their minus sign was a pair of legs walking in the opposite direction. Up until the 1500s a variety of signs were used, but very often the instruction was written in full. Italian mathematicians of the 1400s used p and m (for plus and minus) which was a shortened form of their (Italian) words. The first + and – signs appeared in 1481 in a German manuscript on algebra. For quite some time their use appears to have been restricted only to algebra and it took nearly 100 years before they came into more general use in arithmetic.

Uno de los signos más antiguos para señalar que dos números habían de sumarse fue un jeroglífico del Antiguo Egipto representado por un par de piernas caminando en la dirección de la escritura. El signo menos era un par de piernas caminando en la dirección opuesta. Hasta el 1500 aproximadamente, se usó una amplia variedad de signos, pero muy frecuentemente la instrucción se escribía al completo. Los matemáticos italianos de 1400 usaron p y m (por plus y minus) que eran una forma resumida de sus palabras italianas. Los primeros signos + y – aparecieron en 1481 en un manuscrito alemán sobre álgebra. Durante bastante tiempo su uso parece haber estado restringido solo al álgebra y pasaron cerca de 100 años antes de que se adquirieran un uso general en aritmética.
